Tier 2: lemmy.ca

In addition to the Tier 1: Universal Rules, lemmy.ca has the following rules and policies.

Proposed Rule Changes

To propose a change to these guidelines or start a discussion about how they are applied, you can post in one of the following communities: !fedecan@lemmy.ca, !main@lemmy.ca.

Draft

These are draft guidelines that have not been finalized, and are pending further community discussion.

Use the Platform as Intended

Rule 1: Respect Platform Controls

  • If someone has blocked you, do not attempt to contact them through alternate accounts or new accounts.
  • If someone does not want to engage with you, leave them alone. Continued engagement after being asked to stop is considered to be harassment. This also applies to communities that are intended for specific audiences.

Please see this guide page: How to block a user, community, or instance

Rule 2: Reporting Content

If you see content that violates the rules, please report it instead of engaging with the user or starting fights.

The report button should be used for content that is against established rules, and it is not a button to show disagreement. Repeatedly abusing the report button may cause the moderators to take action against your account. Instead, we recommend that you use the block and hide features to remove content from your view.

Please see this guide page for more information: How to deal with inappropriate content

Rule 3: Vote and Engagement Manipulation

Vote manipulation is prohibited, and applies to both upvotes and downvotes.

  • You are welcome to have multiple accounts, but you cannot use more than one account to vote on the same content. Likewise, you cannot coordinate with other users to vote on specific content.
  • Voting should be specific and intentional. You cannot use automated methods to vote on content, and you cannot use votes as a tool to target specific users or communities.

Other forms of engagement manipulation are also prohibited.

  • You cannot use multiple accounts to steer conversations deceptively. This includes sockpuppetry, astroturfing, or guerrilla marketing. Likewise, you cannot coordinate with other users to do the same.

Content Rules

Rule 4: Hosting Decisions

You cannot create communities for adult content on lemmy.ca. While you can engage with such content from remote instances, all content must be labelled as per Tier 1 Rule 10 (Sensitive Content Labelling).

While you can use the spoiler tags to hide embedded content in text posts, we recommend that you use an external link and mark the content as "NSFW" as some third-party apps do not support the spoiler syntax.

Rule 5: Spam and Advertising

We do not allow accounts where the primary purpose is promotion or sharing links, especially if the account does not engage with the communities in a natural way. You may promote your personal work, hobby, or project, but you should contribute back to the communities you are posting in.

Moderators may remove posts that are:

  • Duplicate posts across multiple communities in a short timeframe, or posts that do not fit the community that they are posted to
  • SEO-style link spam or traffic-driving posts
  • Automated posts that flood a feed
  • Affiliate marketing or undisclosed paid promotion

Rule 6: Bot Accounts

Automated accounts must comply with Tier 1 Rule 11. The account must be labelled as a bot using the account settings, and it should have contact information so that users can reach out to the bot's operator with concerns. As per Rule 3, you cannot vote using automated means.

Rule 7: AI-Generated Content

Moderator Conduct

This section is a placeholder.

This rule needs further community input. The contents below are intended as a starting point for discussion.

Moderators must actively manage their communities and respond to reports and messages in a timely manner. If a community is considered unmoderated, it may be transferred to a new user:

  1. If reports or messages go unanswered for 3 or more days, a user can reach out to the admins by messaging @admin@lemmy.ca.
  2. Admins will contact the moderator(s) to check in.
  3. If no response is received within 7 days, the admin will add new moderators.
  4. New moderators may remove the old moderators from the mod team.

Moderators must not accept payment to remove content or promote a user as a moderator, or otherwise use moderation tools for personal benefit.

Essential Communities and Admin Intervention

Some communities are designated as essential because they serve a critical role in the Canadian Fediverse and cannot be easily replaced. Essential communities include national, provincial/territorial, and regional communities.

Users can raise concerns about problematic moderation in essential communities, and admins will make an effort to mediate an acceptable solution. If you have concerns about moderation in an essential community, please post in !fedecan@lemmy.ca or !main@lemmy.ca.

Federation Policy

Content from a foreign instance is judged by the same standards and guidelines. We will immediately defederate from instances that host content illegal under Canadian law. We may also defederate from instances that display a pattern of rule violations, spam, or similar issues. We will consider refederating with such instances once we are confident that steps have been taken to deal with the source of the problem.

Appeals

If a moderator or admin has taken action on your content or account, you may appeal the decision.

If the moderation action is tied to a specific community, you should appeal to that community's moderation team. Generally, admins will not intervene on community level moderation decisions.

If your account is banned from lemmy.ca and you would like to appeal the ban, please email us at support@lemmy.ca. For instance level appeals, your appeal will be reviewed by someone who was not involved in the original decision where possible.
