Winning songs from the Lemmyvision 3 event, including Canada's submission of 'Fabienk' by Angine de PoitrineWinning songs from the Lemmyvision 3 event, including Canada's submission of 'Fabienk' by Angine de Poitrine

For those who are new to this annual event, Lemmyvision is a song contest held on the threadiverse, where regional instances or communities submit songs from their local region and compete in a global contest. The contest is organized by user @inlandempire@jlai.lu, from the France based Lemmy instance jlai.lu.

This year, one of our submissions (Angine de Poitrine — 'Fabienk') won first place in the global contest! Keep reading for a full recap of the event.

We have participated for two years now:

You can read the full rules and processes for this year's contest here. You can also see the bottom of this article for an interactive view of all relevant posts from this year's event.

We organized the Canadian side of the contest as follows:

  • Users could nominate songs until Saturday April 25th 2026
  • Afterwards, we verified that each song met the contest rules, created playlists on popular streaming platforms, and ran a survey to determine which songs would be submitted to the global contest. Users had until Saturday May 2nd to vote for the songs that we would nominate.
  • The most popular submissions in each category were sent into the global contest, where all participating users could vote from May 4th - 11th 2026

Nominations

This year we received nominations for songs in English, French, and Inuktitut. As such, we were able to submit three songs total into the contest.

How winners were calculated

In order to calculate the winners, I decided on the Borda count, normalized by the number of choices ranked, so that voters who ranked fewer songs are not disadvantaged compared to those who ranked all of them. Thus, if a user ranked n songs, the score for the i^th song would be score = (n - i) / (n - 1), giving 1.0 for a first-place vote and 0.0 for last place. Ballots ranking only one song were given a score of 1.0.

In the French category, there was a clear winner regardless of the ranking method used. In the English category, Boy Golden: Suffer (BG) ranked first when using a normalized Borda count, a regular Borda, and when using a fixed set of points for the top 3 choices in each submission. Meanwhile, The Beaches: Last Girls At The Party (TB) ranked first when using an inverse rank and when counting appearances, while BG still ranked second and third with those methods respectively.

When looking at the raw data, this seems to have happened because BG ranked high in a number of submissions, while TB ranked lower on average but was mentioned in more responses. Since we had a small sample size, and a lot of people only selected a few songs, I chose to use this normalized Borda method as the final ranking seems to capture the intent of the votes the best.

I also explored average ranks, which is what Formbricks survey summary UI uses, but this method crowned a winner based on a single response since that response ranked every song.

The final scores were as follows:

Scores for the English Category

Lemmyvision 3: Canadian Nominations

Scores for the French Category

Lemmyvision 3: Canadian Nominations

As there was only one Inuktitut nomination, it was automatically moved forward as the submission for the Inuktitut category.

From this point forward, we waited patiently for the results of the global contest.
